Our Role

South Metro Connect is a team comprising environmental scientists, transport engineers, planners, and heritage and community engagement specialists from Main Roads WA and AECOM (a technical services consultancy).

Our role is to identify the best possible design and alignment option within the project boundaries that will respect the local social and environmental aspects, and still be able to meet the growing traffic demands and associated social issues within the rapidly expanding southern corridor. Our community engagement objective is to ensure that the community and key stakeholders participate in this decision making process.

South Metro Connect does not have the authority to approve an extension to Roe Highway.  Once the preferred option is identified, the team will prepare the associated supporting documentation (e.g. the Public Environmental Review) and submit the project to relevant government agencies for their consideration.  A final decision will be made by the relevant State and Federal Ministers.

Participating in these early stages of project development gives the community an excellent opportunity to contribute to the design process before the final option is submitted to the relevant agencies for assessment and final decision.

The government has recognised the value of early community participation and South Metro Connect has commenced engagement during the development stage of the project.  Typically, this level of community consultation is undertaken once a preferred design option has been identified.

Who are the decision makers and how are the decisions being made?

Three key decisions will be made before Roe Highway is extended. These decisions are explained in the diagram below (click on the diagram to view it in a larger format).
