In May 2011, South Metro Connect announced the release of the preferred concept design for the proposed Roe Highway Extension. Since that time, there have been some minor changes to the design. The changes include:

  • A realignment of the off ramp from Roe Highway eastbound to Murdoch Drive Extension and related changes to the Bibra Drive bridge and the intersection between the off ramp and Murdoch Drive Extension. The changes reduce impacts on the Lakeside Recreation Centre, the Spanish Club of WA and Murdoch Pines Golf and Recreation Park.
  • Minor reconfiguration of on and off ramp alignments between Murdoch Drive and Karel Avenue to improve road safety and traffic efficiency.
  • A re-alignment of the principal and shared use path adjacent to Kwinana Freeway, including removal of two overpasses. This provides less impact on residents living in Peterborough Circle, North Lake, keeping the path in the south west quadrant of the Kwinana Freeway/Roe Highway Extension Interchange.

Please note that the changes to the design:

  • Have not changed the project footprint.
  • Mean that several publications produced from May 2011 contain the superseded design.

The current preferred concept design is available for download in a number of formats, which will assist those seeking greater detail.

For the past two years, the South Metro Connect team has worked closely with interested members of the community and stakeholders to produce the preferred concept design. Three design workshops and two Multi Criteria Analysis/ option selection workshops were held in 2010, in which people were given the opportunity to influence the concept designs of the Roe Highway Extension. Members of the community and stakeholders were able to raise issues and concerns with the project team, enabling aspects of the concept design to be thoroughly explained and investigated. For those unable to attend the workshops, the opportunity to contribute to the discussion was made available through our online forum.

Over 1300 community comments and feedback were gathered from our workshops and online forum. The South Metro Connect design team has worked hard to incorporate community feedback in the preferred concept design, where possible.

We would like to thank those who participated in our workshops and online forum. Your feedback has been most appreciated and invaluable to the project development phase of the Roe Highway Extension.

The public comment period for submissions on the Roe Highway Extension Public Environmental Review closed on 12 September 2011. It is anticipated that approvals and clearances required for construction to commence will be obtained by early 2013.
