Final Work to be completed on Roe 7

South Metro Connect will be managing the final works on Roe Highway Stage 7 (South Street to Kwinana Freeway) to ensure conditions set by the Environmental Protection Authority are met. The remaining work relates to weed management, land offsets and rehabilitation.

Weed Control

Ongoing maintenance of rehabilitated areas associated with Roe 7 is necessary to ensure that the native species have the best opportunity to survive and establish themselves. Contractors will commence weed control measures in the coming weeks. The contractors employed for this project are experienced in weed control in sensitive environments and will collaborate with City of Melville officers to ensure that the potential for weed invasion from neighbouring sites such as John Connell Reserve is minimised.

Rehabilitation

There are some revegetated areas on Roe 7 that require rehabilitation and are currently the subject of investigation to determine what has caused them to be less successful than others. Initial results from this investigation indicate that soil quality may be the cause (lack of microbial activity and organic matter). Preparation of trials into appropriate remediation methods will be implemented to ensure diversity and abundance criteria are met throughout the project area. There are areas where diversity and abundance completion criteria have been met, however because these areas look bare, Main Roads will plant additional vegetation to improve the appearance. This
work will commence at the onset of the wet season. One area of significant importance is the Karel Avenue Median Strip which will undergo separate rehabilitation investigations.
