Good Turnout for Third Design Workshop

More than 100 people turned up to participate in the third of three design workshops which was held on Tuesday 1 June 2010 in Bibra Lake. Attendees participated in discussions on potential issues and what design features may be included in the North Lake Road to Bibra Drive section and therefore in the preferred concept design for the Roe Highway Extension.
To accommodate those with differing availability the workshop was held over two sessions, one in the morning and one in the evening with roughly the same number of people attending each. Participants included various stakeholders and a broad cross section of community members.
Gaye Gelok, Community and Stakeholder Engagement Manager said, “I would like to thank everyone who participated in all of the design workshops including those not in favour of the project who took the time to listen and provide their comments on the discussion drawing presented. I hope that those who have an interest in this project continue to be involved and provide feedback, so we can come up with a concept design that balances social, economic and environmental needs.”
Mark Hazebroek, Project Director stated, “It was clear that recreation, noise mitigation, community access and minimising the impact the road will have on the wetlands, flora and fauna were the main issues from this final workshop. Great ideas on possible alignments, structure possibilities and enhancement opportunities were discussed with design and environmental specialists, who provided feedback to the community on what may or may not be possible through this sensitive wetland area.”
The next step from here is to compile feedback received to create possible design options. Options will then be taken through a process to identify the preferred option, which will include a Multi Criteria Analysis for any project components that have multiple options that meet the project requirements. A Multi Criteria Analysis working group will soon be established which will include stakeholder and community representation. The working group will help determine which design option will be submitted to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for approval.”
The discussion drawings from all workshops are available here. Our online forum for the section North Lake Road to Bibra Drive will be open for the next 3 weeks. To provide comments please visit www.southmetroforum.com.au and click on Forum 3 – Design Workshops.
Current Planning Studies
The extension of Roe Highway from its current terminus at Kwinana Freeway to Stock Road will complete a key link in Perth’s south west metropolitan area road network. Roe Highway Extension will be a significant east–west linkage supporting demand for between 45,000 and 75,000 vehicles per day by 2031.
Stock Road is ultimately planned to be constructed to freeway standard with grade separated interchanges. This further supports the use of Roe Highway and Stock Road as the preferred route to the Fremantle Inner Harbour (via Stock Road, Leach Highway and High Street), the Kwinana Industrial Area (including the proposed Latitude 32 freight hub and the Australian Marine Complex), and the proposed Outer Harbour.
The reservation for Roe Highway extends further west than Stock Road and it is possible that a road of some type may need to be constructed in this reserve at some point in the future to provide improved access to the coastal areas south of Fremantle, which includes the proposed Cockburn Coast development. Current planning studies will identify the need, type and timing of such a road.
Several planning studies are in progress to evaluate the requirements for Perth’s rapidly expanding south west corridor. These studies include the Road Network Study West of the Planned Roe Highway / Stock Road Interchange, Fremantle Ports Optimisation Study, High Street Study, Stock Road Study and South Metropolitan and Peel Transport Study. In addition, the Roe Highway Strategic Review was completed in October 2009. For further information on
the relevant agency for these studies and their status please see the South Metro Connect website.
