Project Scope

The information in these information sheets was correct at the time of publication and has been retained without change as a record of processes for the project development phase of the Roe Highway Extension. Some of the information may be superseded by more recent documents, including the project’s Public Environmental Review document.

The Western Australian Government has made a commitment to extend Roe Highway, from where it currently ends at Kwinana Freeway in Jandakot to Stock Road in Coolbellup and has engaged South Metro Connect to undertake project development, which is expected to be completed in early 2012.

Throughout the project development phase we are investigating and addressing issues associated with:

  • The natural environment
  • Aboriginal and non Indigenous heritage
  • Community and social amenities
  • Visual amenity
  • Public safety and risk
  • Road alignment
  • Requirements for local road changes, including connections and severance.

As part of this project we are seeking opportunities for environmental and social amenity enhancements while exploring possibilities that lead to innovative solutions.

South Metro Connect Mandate

The Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS) includes a reserve for the Roe Highway Extension, which was formerly known as Roe Highway Stage 8, or Roe 8. The road alignment between North Lake Road and Stock Road is likely to be contained within this reserve. However, the section between Kwinana Freeway and North Lake Road is not constrained to the MRS road reserve. South Metro Connect has worked closely with the community and stakeholders to identify where alternate opportunities may exist in this section, and their input has influenced the design.

Project Phase and Timing

The project development phase began in mid-2009 and we anticipate it will be completed in early 2012. A critical aspect of this phase is acquiring environmental and other regulatory approvals and clearances for the project.
